English And Moderns |

The English and Moderns Department at St. Augustine is dedicated to teaching language skills and to fostering an appreciation of literature. Solid language skills are necessary in today’s world. From conducting critical research to writing reports to delivering oral presentations, language is key. With the advent of technology and the speed of 21st century life, students must develop confidence and agility in their language skills. Today’s world is fiercely competitive: we are committed to teaching and strengthening skills that our students will be able to carry with them throughout their post-secondary education and work life.
In addition, we aim to expose students to a variety of literature and media works they might not normally find on their own. We hope to foster a love of reading and critical thinking through the exploration of both fiction and non-fiction. Through literature, writers hold up a mirror to us and our world. With fictional stories they present us with universal truths and force us to look at profound issues of our country, our world, our souls. We use stories and plays to teach students that the profound questions of existence—why we are here, where is God, what is morality—are eternal questions worth considering.
